AI Book Cover Design — and how to build a KDP wraparound
How AI cover generators turn your title and synopsis into a finished cover, plus the exact dimensions, spine math, and bleed you need for an Amazon KDP paperback wraparound — front, spine, and back.
How AI cover design works in our app
The cover generator combines a fine-tuned image model with a typography engine. You get a finished, KDP-uploadable cover — not a raw illustration you have to take into Photoshop.
Describe your book
Title, subtitle, genre, mood. The AI extracts visual cues — colors, lighting, subject — from your synopsis automatically.
Pick a style direction
Photoreal, illustrated, minimalist, fantasy painting, cozy mystery, thriller noir — each style is tuned for genre conventions on Amazon's bestseller pages.
Generate front cover variants
The model produces multiple ebook-sized fronts (1600×2560). Pick a winner, regenerate, or refine prompt — Pro includes unlimited regenerations.
Extend to a wraparound
Choose your trim size (6×9, 5×8, 8.5×11) and page count. We compute spine width and extend the front art across spine + back with proper bleed.
Export print-ready PDF
Download a single PDF/X-3 wraparound at 300 DPI with KDP-spec bleed and safe area. Upload directly — no Photoshop required.
Building a KDP wraparound cover, step by step
A wraparound is a single PDF spanning back cover → spine → front cover. Get any of these wrong and KDP rejects the upload.
1. Calculate the full cover size
Width = (trim width × 2) + spine width + 0.25" bleed.
Height = trim height + 0.25" bleed.
Example: 6 × 9" paperback, 200 pages, white paper → 12.7004" × 9.25" at 300 DPI = 3,810 × 2,775 px.
2. Spine width formula
Spine width = page count × thickness per page.
- • White paper (60#):
0.002252"per page - • Cream paper (55#):
0.0025"per page - • Color paper (60#):
0.002347"per page
Books with fewer than 100 pages don't get a printed spine. Text wraps from front to back without a center panel.
3. Bleed and safe area
KDP requires 0.125" bleed on all four outer edges. Keep critical content (title, author, ISBN barcode) at least 0.25" away from any trim or spine fold.
The ISBN barcode area on the back cover is fixed at 2" × 1.2", positioned in the lower-right of the back panel.
4. Export the right file
A single PDF (PDF/X-3 preferred), 300 DPI, fonts embedded, RGB or CMYK. Maximum 650 MB. Our exporter handles all of this — you click "Export wraparound" and upload the file straight to the KDP paperback wizard.
Most popular KDP trim sizes
Pick a trim that matches your genre — readers expect specific shapes on Amazon. Spine math below assumes white paper.
| Trim size | Spine per 100 pages | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 5" × 8" | 0.225" | Novellas, poetry, memoir |
| 5.25" × 8" | 0.225" | Trade paperback fiction |
| 5.5" × 8.5" | 0.225" | Standard fiction |
| 6" × 9" | 0.225" | Most popular — fiction & non-fiction |
| 7" × 10" | 0.225" | Workbooks, journals, manuals |
| 8" × 10" | 0.225" | Photo books, large-print |
| 8.5" × 8.5" | 0.225" | Children's picture books |
| 8.5" × 11" | 0.225" | Puzzle books, activity books |

Frequently asked questions
Everything self-publishers ask about AI cover design and KDP wraparounds.
How does AI book cover design actually work?
An AI image model is conditioned on your title, subtitle, genre, and synopsis to produce a front-cover image at ebook resolution (1600×2560 or higher). Strong tools then layer typography on top with genre-aware fonts and reserve safe space for the title and author. KDP AI Book Maker does both in one step — image + typesetting — so you get a finished cover, not a raw illustration.
What is a KDP wraparound cover?
A wraparound cover is the single image used on a paperback or hardcover that spans the back cover, spine, and front cover as one continuous artwork. Amazon KDP requires wraparound covers as a single PDF at the exact final trim size (including spine width and 0.125" bleed on all four outer edges).
What size should a KDP paperback wraparound cover be?
Width = (front trim width × 2) + spine width + 0.25" bleed. Height = trim height + 0.25" bleed. For a 6×9 paperback with 200 pages on white paper: spine = 200 × 0.002252 = 0.4504", so the full cover is 12.7004" × 9.25" at 300 DPI. The cover designer auto-calculates this from your trim and page count.
How do I calculate KDP spine width?
Multiply your page count by the per-page thickness for your paper type. White paper (60#): 0.002252" per page. Cream paper (55#): 0.0025" per page. Color paper (60#): 0.002347" per page. Books under 100 pages don't get a printed spine — text is centered on the front and back.
What file format does KDP want for paperback covers?
A single PDF (PDF/X-3 preferred) at exact wraparound dimensions, 300 DPI minimum, with all fonts embedded. RGB or CMYK both work — KDP converts to CMYK on print. Maximum file size is 650 MB. Our exporter outputs a compliant PDF every time.
Can the AI match my front-cover art onto the back and spine?
Yes. After you finalize the front, the wraparound generator extends the background, color palette, and lighting across the spine and back so the artwork feels continuous. You then add your back-cover blurb, ISBN barcode area, and author photo via the on-canvas editor.
Do I own the rights to AI-generated covers?
Yes. On any paid plan you own commercial rights to the cover art and typography you generate, including the right to publish and sell on Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and other platforms.
Can I edit the cover after the AI generates it?
Yes. The on-canvas editor lets you swap fonts, change title color, reposition the author name, add a series number, drop a tagline on the spine, and replace the back-cover blurb — all without leaving the app.
